Vinyl Flooring

One of the least expensive forms of flooring, vinyl is very popular among homeowners, because it offers great value.
A variety of desirable characteristics continue to make this versatile flooring material a popular option to this day. However there are also a number of drawbacks to using this material in your home.

Pros:
  • Vinyl does not get cold in the winter, and is generally soft beneath your feet. Some vinyl sheets and tiles have a padded layer that can make walking on these floors even more pleasurable.
  • They are available in a huge assortment of colors and styles, with some designs even mimicking the look of stone tiles or wood planks.
  • A well installed vinyl floor is almost impervious to water penetration, making this the perfect material for use in a bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, or other high moisture space in the home.
  • If properly installed and maintained, vinyl last upwards of ten to twenty years. However, the quality of the material that you purchase, and the way it was manufactured, will determine how well your floor lasts over time.
  • Requiring practically no maintenance after installation, vinyl needs to just be swept and mopped occasionally to keep the floor clean.

While vinyl flooring is low maintenance and highly durable, there are also a number of drawbacks that are associated with this material. Of these, its ecological impact on the personal and world environment may be some of the most disconcerting.

Cons:
  • The spongy quality of vinyl flooring may prevent a glass from breaking if it’s dropped on the floor, but a sharp object can gouge the surface if dropped.
  • Colors can fade with exposure to too much direct sunlight and floors can be damaged by extreme temperatures.
  • Vinyl flooring is not biodegradable and does not break down naturally into the environment in a short period of time. It is also very rarely recycled, which means that old, worn out materials, often end up taking up space in land fills.
  • Vinyl flooring does nothing to a home’s resale value, and it can prove very difficult to remove once it is installed.

If you are interested in finding a cost effective and attractive way to update the interior of your home, vinyl flooring is a great option. As with any flooring material there are concerns and maintenance to take into account before you make your final decision. Instead of having to pay a hefty price tag for wood or ceramic, consider vinyl that mimics their appearance to have a long lasting floor.
